Restroom Cleaning & Sanitization
Step-by-step restroom cleaning and sanitization procedure for commercial cleaning teams. Covers PPE, pre-spray dwell time, fixture cleaning, supply restocking, and floor care. Follow product label instructions for all chemical contact times β they supersede any general guidance in this procedure.
Procedure Steps
-
1
Preparation & PPE
Put on chemical-resistant gloves, safety glasses or goggles (use goggles when the product SDS indicates splash risk or for concentrated chemicals), and apron. Gather all required cleaning supplies and chemicals. Place wet floor signs at all restroom entrances before beginning work.
-
2
Empty & Replace Trash
Remove all trash bags from bins. Wipe down trash can interiors if soiled. Replace with fresh liners. Remove any debris from floors.
-
3
Pre-Spray & Dwell
Apply EPA-registered disinfectant to all toilets, urinals, sinks, and countertops. Allow product to dwell for the contact time specified on the product label (varies by product β check the label, do not assume). Spray mirrors and glass surfaces with glass cleaner. While disinfectant dwells, proceed to other tasks.
-
4
Clean Toilets & Urinals
After dwell time is complete, scrub inside bowls with toilet brush. Wipe exterior surfaces including base, flush handle, and seat (both sides). Clean urinal screens and drain areas. Check for proper flushing.
-
5
Clean Sinks & Counters
Scrub sinks including faucets and drain areas. Wipe down all counter surfaces. Polish chrome fixtures. Remove water spots and soap residue.
-
6
Clean Mirrors, Glass & Partitions
Wipe mirrors with glass cleaner using lint-free cloth. Clean any glass partitions or windows. Wipe down toilet stall partitions (high-touch surfaces). Ensure streak-free finish on all glass.
-
7
Restock Supplies
Refill paper towel dispensers. Restock toilet paper holders. Fill soap dispensers. Replace air freshener if needed. Note any maintenance issues (leaks, broken fixtures, running toilets) for reporting. Restocking is done before mopping to avoid walking on wet floors.
-
8
Mop Floors (Last Step)
Sweep or dust mop floor first to remove loose debris. Mop with disinfectant solution starting from the back of the room toward the exit. Pay attention to corners, behind toilets, and around floor drains. Check floor drains for odor or blockage. Leave wet floor signs in place until floor is fully dry β this is standard industry practice and an OSHA compliance expectation for maintaining safe walking-working surfaces.
